October Horror Movie Challenge - 2016 Edition

It's October so that means it's time once again for the Horror Movie Challenge. I don't know why but every year I seem to alternate between calling it the "horror" movie challenge and the "scary" movie challenge. Regardless of everything that October ushers in (new/returning tv shows, new video game releases, New York Comic Con, etc...), I still managed to watch 42 horror movies last year.  Since I'll only be going to Comic Con one day this year, I hope to squeeze a few more movies in.  This year, instead of asking for recommendations, I've decided to make my own list of movies primarily from the 70s and 80s.  Some I'll be revisiting for the first time in decades while others I'll be watching for the first time.  In addition, I will watch a handful of recently released horror movies that I missed.  Should be fun. 

The rules are quite simple and come in two flavors:

  1. The "basic" challenge is to watch 13 scary, horror or Halloween themed films from midnight October 1, 2015 through October 31, 2015.  For this, 2 of the 13 films must be new discoveries, movies you've never seen before.
  2. The "ultimate" challenge is to watch 31 horror, scary or Halloween themed movies must be viewed during the same timeframe mentioned above.  For this, 10 new discoveries are recommended.  Those will be underlined.

2016 Summer Movie Challenge

Weather is turning warm, which means it's time for this years summer movie challenge.  Rules are the same as last year but here's a recap:

You pick what you think will be the top 10 domestic grossing movies of the summer from highest grossing to 10th highest grossing.  The trick is trying to correctly predict where every movie lands on the list.  3 dark horse picks are added for incentive points.  The domestic totals are tallied through and ends on Labor Day (September 5th).

RULES:

Getting number 1 and/or number 10 dead-on gets you 13 points each.

The rest of the scoring goes like this:
  • 10 points for numbers 2-9 dead-on
  • 7 points if your pick was only 1 spot away from where it ended up
  • 5 points if it was 2 spots away
  • 3 points if your pick is anywhere in the Top 10
  • 1 point for each dark horse that makes it into the Top 10
The scoring is tabulated so that you get the SINGLE HIGHEST point value for each pick.  For example, if you get number 1 or 10 right, you don't get 13 points for getting it dead on AND 3 points for it being in the top 10.  You only get 13 points.

2016 Comic Book Movie Challenge

Every year, I get a group of friends together to join me in the Summer Movie Challenge where we vie to determine who can most accurately guess the order of the highest box office releases, for bragging rights. This year, there will be 8 comic book movie releases and I thought it would be fun to create a separate challenge for them. But while the Summer Movie Challenge only runs from May through August, this challenge will be a year long event.

If you received this blog post via email, then you have been exclusively selected to participate but are under no obligation to do so.  It's all for fun.

Similar to last summers challenge, we'll be following the SlashFilmCast model of a point based system. If you're new to the challenge or have forgotten how it works, you only have to put the movies in order of how you believe they will do at the box office from highest to lowest. Due to the limited amount of movies in this challenge, the point based rules will be slightly truncated. They are as follows...
  • 13 points each for getting #1 or #7 dead on
  • 10 points each for getting #2-6 dead on
  • 7 points each if your pick is 1 spot away from your guess
  • 5 points each if your pick is 2 spots away from your guess
And that's it.  Keep in mind this will only be for domestic grosses.  All entries MUST be in by February 11th and I would prefer if email was the way they were submitted. This way, if there is any dispute on picks submitted, email is the best method to fast check. Do not share your opinions until after entries have been submitted.  Remember, it's competitive. Once all entries are in, I will update this blog entry to post them.
