2017 October Horror Movie Challenge

It's October so that means it's time for the yearly horror movie challenge.  Woo-hoo!!!

Last years challenge was unlike any I've had before, for 2 reasons.  First, I had the most number of people join me than ever before, making the challenge that much more fun.  And that accounts for the second reason, I watched the most horror movies I've ever seen in a month.  You can see the results here.  While I don't have plans to top or match the total number of movies from last year, this year I thought I'd set my sights on total number of movies I've never seen before.  I'll still watch some of my favorites throughout the month, but I've missed many B horror movies throughout the years so this will be my chance to remedy that.

As always, there are 2 options in the challenge and are as follows:
  1. For people with busy schedules, we have the basic challenge.  This is to watch 13 (or more) horror themed films through the month of October.  Of the 13 movies, 2 must be movies you're viewing for the first time.  These will be in bold.
  2. For those that have the time, we have the ultimate challenge. This is to watch 31 (or more) horror themed films during the same timeframe mentioned above.  For this, 10 of them must be movies you're viewing for the first time.  As mentioned above, these will be in bold.
As always, I've invited some family and friends to join me in the challenge.  I'll be updating their lists accordingly.

2017 Year Long Movie Challenge

With a new year comes a new movie challenge.  Welcome back to the year-long challenge which I've refined to include non-superhero big budget movies.  To recap, every year I get a group of friends together to join me in a Summer Movie Challenge where we vie to determine who can most accurately guess the order of the highest box office releases, for bragging rights. Last year, I decided to add a year-long challenge consisting only of superhero movies. This year, I thought it'd be great to include non-superhero big budget movies to the challenge.  This way, there'll be enough to formulate a top 10 list.  Keep in mind, this in no way impacts our regular summer movie challenge which I will still do to determine the 2017 king.

Last year, Sean (who is new to the group and challenge) won both.  But we'll just chalk that up to beginners luck.  :)

As always, if you received this blog post via email, then you have been exclusively selected to participate but are under no obligation to do so.  It's all for fun.

I'll be using BoxOfficeMojo.com and SuperHeroHype.com as my sources this year so if it's not in the challenge, then it probably wasn't in their calendar.  Keep in mind release date schedules can change.

Here's a recap of the rules:

Accurately getting number 1 and/or number 10 gets you 13 points each.

The rest of the scoring is as follows:

  • 10 points each for accurately getting numbers 2-9 
  • 7 points if your pick was only 1 slot away
  • 5 points if you pick was 2 slots away
  • 3 points if your pick is anywhere in the top 10
  • 1 point for each dark horse pick that makes it into the top 10
